Bar Takeover - Sarah’s Dozen

"Sarah's Dozen" started it all. The Dozen is a (not-so-secret) secret menu created so that Sarah Walsh could present some of her favorite wines coming out of Virginia. This menu led, ultimately, to the whole idea of our Bar Takeovers in the first place. So she’s to blame…

But Sarah's still got wines up her sleeve! Come join Sarah as she presents a handful of wild, interesting, and possibly secret wines from Virginia and beyond.

Live Music - Rob Cheatham and Co.

Join us for a live music performance with Rob Cheatham and Co.

Rob Cheatham is a prolific songwriter and performer from Charlottesville, VA. He's been a member of a number of high-energy touring bands for years, and is also currently fronting a one-of-a-kind acoustic trio. Think a dash of Springsteen, a bit of the Beatles, some Willie Nelson, and a sprinkle of Tom Waits, and you might start getting the idea.

Did we mention that Rob and Nate have played in multiple bands together, starting back in high school? Well, it's true. We're lucky to have Rob up to join us at one of our only live music performances of the year, and gossip has it that part of the deal is that Nate has to get up with the group for a few songs. We shall see.

Performance starts at 4 and ends at 7.

Glasses, bottles, and light fare available.

Bar Takeover - Joy Ting Wines

Joy Ting is a Virginia winemaker and also the director of the Virginia Winemakers Research Exchange.  While at Michael Shaps Wineworks, Joy began a passion project: she made two barrels per year, attempting to produce interesting and unique Virginia wines.

Her wine, Rosso di (Monticello), is a mountain-grown Merlot made with 50% whole cluster fruit and partial carbonic maceration, resulting in a food-friendly wine with the fruitiness of Beaujolais and the freshness of an Italian red.

She will be pouring her wine alongside a special guest.  Stay tuned!

Bar Takeover - Franny Beck

Bar Takeover - Franny Beck

It’s an Oregon coup!

Franny Beck is a Willamette Valley wine project of Allyson and Michael Sterling, who in earlier years called Virginia their home.  In 2012, Michael and Nate worked side by side in vineyards in Loudoun County, and while we were all hoping they’d set up their wine project here in Virginia, alas, they caught the Pinot Noir bug and headed for cooler climes.  That said, the wines are right up our alley, stylistically and philosophically similar to what Walsh is trying to do.  And delicious!  So let’s give them a warm Commonwealth welcome!

A bit about Franny Beck:

“At Franny Beck our goal is to not only create wines of balance, but wines that speak to the place from which they come—vintage specific, vineyard centered, elegant and honest wines.  We work with growers who either farm organically or biodynamically, two baselines that help to ensure that the fruit we use to make our wine is of the highest quality.  All of the fruit is hand harvested and picked when optimal physiological ripeness has been achieved.

What this means is that, while we utilize chemistries like brix, pH and TA, we base our picking decisions on flavor.  In doing so, we bring in fruit to the winery that is at the optimal point to produce the types of wines that we love and believe show the best that the Willamette Valley has to offer.  Once in the winery, we try our best to get out of the way and let the fruit become the wines that it wants to be.  We are low impact with our ferments, ensuring that the place, the terroir of each vineyard, is allowed to express itself.”

Bar Takeover - Midland Const. and War & Rust

Midland Const. is a family winegrowing project based in Fort Defiance in the Middle River watershed of the Shenandoah Valley. Tim and Ben Jordan, both Virginia winemakers, started making a small amount of wine in 2017 from their family vineyard, while also helming the reins at larger Virginia wineries. They will be pouring their inaugural Midland Const. releases and, if we’re lucky, maybe a wine based digestif or two.

If you don’t yet know about War & Rust, just wait.

Bar Takeover - Maya Hood White

Maya Hood White, the Viticulturist and Associate Winemaker for Early Mountain Vineyards, in Madison, Va, has made a name for herself for a focus on environmentally low-impact winegrowing, helping to craft some of the state’s most well-respected wine.  She has also put together a wonderful Pet Nat program at Early Mountain, bottling the first Pet Nats in the State, and is a driving force behind Early Mountain’s vineyard-based winemaking.

Join Maya as she pours not only a selection of her Pet Nats, but also a new (and yet unnamed) dessert wine project which she has just released.

Bar Takeover - Lightwell Survey

Lightwell Survey was created to explore Virginia's lesser known vineyard locations, with a focus on the Shenandoah Valley, feeling that these sites would produce unusual, delicious, and provocative wines.  The fruit is grown at high elevations, on stony soils, tended by dedicated farmers. Lightwell Survey's goal it to participate as a member of the creative class of our industry, so that Virginia's new wave is collaborative, qualitative, and original.  These wines are bangin’.

Bar Takeover - Jake Busching Wines

Jake is a Virginia wine industry veteran, so to speak, who for the past few years has been producing some very interesting, intense wines under his own label, Jake Busching Wines. If you haven't had F8, you need it in your life.

Growing up on a farm in Minnesota, Jake was well prepared for the agricultural aspects of the wine industry. He believes in soil-to-bottle wine growing and has brought that focus to bear at wineries like Keswick Vineyards, Pollak Vineyards, Grace Estate Winery, Michael Shaps Wineworks and now his very own label.

This is his second Bar Takeover with us, and we look forward to many more!
