2018 Walsh Family Wine Loudoun County Cuvee

2018 Walsh Family Wine Loudoun County Cuvee

When it became clear that the 2018 vintage was going to be difficult for red wine, we shifted the majority of our red wine blocks into our rosé program, including all of our Cab Sauv and nearly all of our Cab Franc.  This left a good amount of Merlot, which, ripening early, we were able to get to a nice red fruit juiciness, and then our Tannat and Petit Verdot blocks, which we chose to blend into this wine.

While our ultimate goal is to focus on vineyard-specific bottlings, the 2018 vintage just didn't allow for expression of site.  So, we broke the red wines from 2018 into two bottlings - the Merlot-based Loudoun County Cuveé, and then a blend of Petit Verdot and Tannat.  The Loudoun County Cuveé is a lighter, red-fruit driven wine, with a nice freshness.  This is about as close to an "everyday" wine as we intend to produce.  That said, it has a great vivacity and freshness that makes it a nice compliment to a lighter meal.

90% Russ Mountain Merlot, 8% North Gate Petit Verdot, 2% Sycamore Springs Cabernet Franc

Tasting Notes
Aromatics of bright, fresh red fruit - cherry, raspberry, and a touch of vanilla - lead into a medium bodied, nicely acidic finish, still bursting with bright red fruits. Easy-drinking, a lighter-style red wine showing wonderfully youthful aromatics.
